Indigenous People Working in the City: Occupations and Identities

We should start by deconstructing some presuppositions about the essence of the popular-cultural. Bastos and Camus (Indígenas) review the urban occupations of subsistence practiced by Indians as Indians, and which therefore constitute spaces of reproduction and transformation of ethnic identity:

Another field where indigenous presence is significant is the tortilla factory where manufacture and sales are combined … It also represents a clear case in which the dwelling and production unit are united, blurring domestic and labor boundaries: the food is prepared in the same fire as the tortillas, the female workers share the house with the family business owners, the house chores (done by women) are mixed with work in which the owner participates as one more worker … For all that, the tortilla factory becomes a special environment as far as the preservation of ethnic traits is concerned … Not only because the workers hardly speak Spanish and rather use their native languages, more functional in this case, but because being a women’s space, even when there are not any, the tendency to preserve traditions and customs is greater.
